About the Hotel

34 Old Elvet, Durham, United Kingdom

Oyo The Townhouse offers 5-star accommodations on one of Durham's older streets, lined with a handsome mix of 18th- and 19th-century houses, now mainly offices or University departments.

Intimate Decorated Rooms

The 11 individually decorated guestrooms at The Townhouse feature espresso makers and flat-screen televisions. Most rooms are intimate rather than large, with private bathrooms equipped with designer toiletries and hair dryers. Certain rooms include a seating area for your convenience, and a fully accessible disabled room with wet room style bathroom is available on the ground floor.

Distinctive Dining Experience

The small dining room, heavy with purple tassled-velvet chairs, leopard-print carpet and faux-plasterwork and frescoed ceiling, is designed for romantic breakfasts and indulgent afternoon teas. Full breakfasts are served on weekdays from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM, offering a handsome, cooked-to-order choice including herb omelettes, pancakes, plus a splendid Durham grill, with vegetarian option. The small, chandelier-hung bar has a decent range of well-priced cocktails, Champagnes and wines.

Tranquil Leisure Spaces

A terrace overlooking the small rear garden makes a quiet place for coffee and the papers. Guests can look forward to a garden and a library at OYO The Townhouse, while classic cars and the gentle sounds of a clavinola are complemented by views of the river. Fishing offers a great chance to get out on the surrounding water, and the area's natural beauty can be seen at Whitworth Hall Country Park and Waldridge Fell Country Park.

Strategic Central Location

Equidistant from the city center and riverside, Oyo The Townhouse is only 1 km from Durham and 40 km from Durham Tees Valley. The banks of the River Wear and Durham University Cricket Club are 150 metres away, while cultural highlights include Gala Theatre Durham and Durham World Heritage Site Visitor Centre. The Yorkshire Dales and the Northumbrian coastline are also close by for scenic walks, with Newcastle International Airport being the nearest airport.

Staying at this hotel was a delight! The beautiful and welcoming room in the wonderfully restored townhouse set a cozy tone, but it was a small downside not to find ice in the ice bucket. The service was exceptional, with the staff going out of their way to show us around and provide great friendly assistance. The location, in the classy outskirts of Durham, was perfect for quiet relaxation yet conveniently close to excellent walks and dining options. Though the dining experience had some room for improvement, the overall stay was pleasant.

The hotel had smaller rooms than expected from the website photos, but with a semi-fake yet charming semi-gothic ambiance. The bath in the middle of the room was a unique experience. The rooms were individually unique but too small for two people, lacking surfaces for convenience.
